What was the HMT Empire Windrush?

After World War II, Britain needed workers to help rebuild the country. People from the Caribbean, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other Commonwealth countries were invited to come to Britain. In 1948, the ship HMT Empire Windrush brought one of the first large groups of Caribbean migrants to Britain. This generation became known as the 'Windrush generation'.

Migration from the Commonwealth has enriched British culture in many ways, including food, music, art, and sport. However, immigrants also faced discrimination and racism. The Race Relations Acts of 1965 and 1968 made racial discrimination illegal. Britain today is a diverse, multicultural society, and the contributions of immigrant communities are widely recognised.
