4.1.3 Languages spoken in the UK

English is the official language of the UK and is spoken throughout the country. However, there are also other traditional languages. Welsh is spoken in Wales and has equal legal status with English there. Scottish Gaelic is spoken in parts of Scotland, particularly the Highlands and Islands. Irish Gaelic (also called Irish) is spoken by some people in Northern Ireland. Scots is a dialect spoken in Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland.
