1.1.2 Tolerance and respect

The UK is a diverse society where people of different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs live together. Tolerance and mutual respect are fundamental values that allow this diverse society to function. Everyone in the UK is expected to treat others with respect, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, or age.

While people are free to practise different religions and hold different beliefs, they are also expected to respect the rights of others to do the same. This means accepting that other people may have different customs and traditions. The UK celebrates this diversity through events, festivals, and community activities throughout the year.

Discrimination against anyone on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation is against the law. The Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society.
