4.2.1 Christianity and the Church of England

Christianity is the largest religion in the UK. The Church of England is the established church in England, meaning it has a special legal relationship with the state. The monarch is the head of the Church of England (the 'Supreme Governor'). The spiritual leader of the Church of England is the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Church of England is a Protestant church.

There is no established church in Wales or Northern Ireland. The Church in Wales was disestablished in 1920.
