3.5.1 The early 20th century and social reforms

At the start of the 20th century, the Liberal government introduced important social reforms. The National Insurance Act of 1911 provided health and unemployment insurance for workers. Old age pensions were introduced in 1908. These reforms laid the foundations for the welfare state that would be fully developed after World War II.
