3.4.9 The growth of the British Empire

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the British Empire grew to become the largest empire the world had ever seen. At its height, it covered about a quarter of the world's land surface and included territories in every continent. The Empire was built through trade, colonisation, and military conquest. Key territories included India, large parts of Africa, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Empire brought both benefits and suffering. It spread the English language, legal systems, and parliamentary democracy around the world. However, it also involved exploitation, the destruction of indigenous cultures, and the imposition of British rule on unwilling populations. The legacy of the Empire continues to shape the modern world and the Commonwealth of Nations.
