3.4.8 Wars with France and the Crimean War

Britain fought a series of wars against France during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The most significant was the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). Admiral Lord Nelson defeated the French navy at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 but was killed during the battle. Trafalgar Square in London is named after this victory. Nelson's Column stands in the centre of the square.

The Duke of Wellington finally defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, ending the Napoleonic Wars. Wellington later became Prime Minister. The Crimean War (1853-1856) was fought against Russia. Florence Nightingale became famous for improving nursing care for wounded soldiers during this war. She is considered the founder of modern nursing.
