Edward VI was the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. He became king at the age of nine in 1547 and was a strong Protestant. During his short reign, the Church of England became more firmly Protestant, with a new Book of Common Prayer introduced. Edward died in 1553 at the age of just 15.

After Edward's death, his half-sister Mary I became queen. Mary was a devout Catholic and tried to restore Catholicism to England. She had nearly 300 Protestants burned at the stake for their beliefs, earning her the nickname 'Bloody Mary'. Mary married Philip II of Spain but died in 1558 without an heir.
